Sulphur Aeon – The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos

“The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos” is an album with amazing and sharp guitar interventions. Melodic Death Metal bands have this neat feature of having so skillful and qualified guitar interventions which serve to give the melody to death – got strange, didn’t it? Guitars in Melodeth are the way bands found of giving more melody to the sound without loosing any inch of power. When I say interventions, I mean not only solos, but licks, bridges and riffs. So, the sepulchral voice does the thing to give more violence and chaos a Metal band needs.

The very first beginning of “The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos” is what I call deceptive because the imposed voice and guitar interventions make one thinks it is a Doom Metal band. After some seconds, this disillusion is unmade. A sepulchral voice takes the lead and the song gets more despair, too much despair even for a Doom Metal band. Sulphur Aeon did their best in making a song with all those strong features. Drumming with lots of fillings – well-put I have to say – makes you think if Sulphur Aeon is indeed a Doom Metal band. Track two, “Yuggothian Spell,” though, makes no mistake that we are talking about a Melodic Death Metal band. But the feeling keeps alive until the end of “The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos.”

This deceptive cadence gives the strong flavoring to Sulphur Aeon and what makes the uniqueness of their music. I enjoy when much when a band bounces singing styles because it adds an ample array of possibilities of sonance. Sulphur Aeon do it masterly. They transcend their musical style with flying colors. By the way, listen to the splendid guitar riffing in “The Summoning of Nyarlathotep.” Great effect of playing up and down major scale notes.
