Daron Malakian on New System of a Down Music: “It’s Not Likely That it’s Going to Happen Anytime Soon”

No matter how many times and in how many different ways the members of System of a Down say the same thing, the perennial reminder that the band will not release new music in the near future strikes the metal populace hard and deep. So here we are yet again, in our ongoing crusade to generate clicks and immediately blow all that money on a lavish upgrade to the MetalSucks Mansion (I’m thinking that gold toilet is looking kind of ratty, maybe time for a platinum one?).

So: System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian has reiterated, yet again (that’s right: he’s reiterated the reiteration), that no new System of a Down music is in the works. Can you believe it?? I sure can’t. It’s not like he and other members of the band haven’t said the exact same thing a million times in recent history.

The latest from the Department of Redundancy Department comes from an interview with KROQ [transcribed by Ultimate Guitar]. When asked whether the lack of new SoaD music had to do with creative differences, family commitments or both, Malakian replied:

“It might be a mix of both. People change; as time goes on taste changes, and people want to take the band into different directions, and you have other members of the band that maybe don’t want to go into those directions.

“So we just haven’t come to an agreement on how we would want to do it if we did make a record. I never say never, but at this point, it’s not likely that it’s going to happen anytime soon.”

So there you have it: same shit, different day. Onward!

Elsewhere in the interview, Malakian reveals he’s been turning material he penned for System into Scars on Broadway songs, and that the writing approach isn’t much different for each. Which makes sense, but is kinda a bummer. Read more here.
