I’m a simple woman (or at least as simple as we get). Give me a black metal album with dark and dirty tremolo riffs, anguished vocals, and chaotic blast beats and I’m content. I thank the Montreal-based black metal quartet, Ossuaire, for coming out of their three-year hiatus and delivering just that on a silver platter with the release of Premiers Chants.
The album came out last Friday, April 26th, and it’s a bubbling cauldron brewing with whatever the opposite of sugar, spice, and everything nice is. The songs are laden with caustic riffs and merciless blast beats that often slow down and give way to grimmer, more deliberate patterns at just the right times, taking us back to the primitive age of the rise of black metal. Premiers Chants is the first chapter of a concept spawning two albums which are a “recounting of major events [that contributed] to the downfall of Christianity and the rise of heresy.”
The album’s track listing, which is fully in French, goes sequentially through major events in Christianity’s history. Track number five is entitled “Saint Céphalophores,” who is depicted in the album cover, and the last song’s title translates to “The Grand Apostasy,” or the renunciation of religious beliefs. Because what’s black metal without some blasphemous teachings? I’m hoping the second album in this series begins in complete and utter madness.
