Greetings from Yellowstone National Park! For the next few weeks, I’ll be reporting to you from the heart of the world’s favorite supervolcano… if I don’t get eaten by a bear, or fall into a geyser, or spend the rest of my life living off the land once I realize that society is a lie. Descend into the sepulchre. Surrender yourself to all-encompassing dread that emits from the void. Or, worse, submit to an entire lifetime of describing chaotic one-man blackened death projects with words like Lovecraftian, abyssal, mind-shattering, and totally not trendy. Don’t get me wrong — Endless Spiritual Embodiment is super sick. But it probably won’t fragment your psyche the way Baby’s First Cosmic Black Metal Album
did back in the day.

Classic Norwegian heavyweights Kampfar have been experiencing a bit of career turbulence lately, winning the Norwegian Spellemann “Best Metal Act” award in 2015 for that year’s Profane, then deciding to call it quits not even two years later. Apparently the move to split was just a prank, though, ‘cuz their brand new record hits the shelves today. Bundle up for a frostbitten trek into the Scandinavian Highlands, but be prepared for some twists and turns towards other genres (including pagan folk, goth rock, and electronica).
Abiogenesis – A Coming Into Existence (Agonia) listen

Take a trip back in time and get down to the roots of one of tech-death’s most powerful, long-standing acts. Why they didn’t name it Origin’s Origins, I’ll never know, but Abiogenesis – A Coming Into Existence is also a suitably dope title. The album features resurrections of some of Origin’s earliest takes, many of which were created before they were even an official band. The 1991-1996 material was re-recorded by founding member Paul Ryan on all instruments, so it’s about as authentic as it gets.

Okay, who said France gets to have all the talent? Save some for the rest of us, geez. This new split from two fairly new French bands, Cepheide and Time Lurker, features only the most exquisite songwriting and musicality (though I’ve come to expect nothing less from the label, Les Acteurs de l’Ombre Productions). The sprawling atmo-black splendor gives room for both dreamlike euphoria and menacing chimeras, gradually absorbing the listener into its dimension until no semblance of human remains.
