I have seen many people on this subreddit and other online metal forums/communities talking about how overproduced and quantized technical death metal is. Blanket statements like this can't be made about a genre as diverse as technical death metal.
It is obviously true that this statement applies to bands like Decrepit Birth and Archspire (who are amazing without the effects), but mistakes and actual humanity can be heard from many other bands including, but not limited to Beyond Creation, First Fragment, and Cryptopsy. I am not sure, but it seems Obscura and Necrophagist are the same way. Akroasis was not overproduced, but mistakes are not very common at all in Diluvium, so Diluvium is up for debate.
Necrophagist is a different story. Their music sounds absolutely flawless on their records, but they sound flawless live anyways, so it is hard to tell.
People love to say that technical death metal has no soul, or is just mindless shredding, and while that is true for some of it (and that is not always a bad thing), much of it has heart, soul and humanity.
