I’ve been trying to figure out what the time signature of the chorus is in Metallica’s “Hit the Lights.” Looking on the internet, people say it’s in 7/4, but it sounds just a tiny bit longer, as if the next measure starts on the second partial of the fourth eighth note triplet group.
For example
1 2 3 4 5 6 (Hit) (The) -> Lights lands on the downbeat, but it also feels like the third note in the quarter note triplet that started on 7.
Thinking about this in terms of a x/4, x/8, or x/16, etc. time signature wouldn’t make much sense because the pulse is being felt in relation to the subdivision of the quarter note triplet, so the time signature would have to be an irrational 4/12 (1 (la) li (2) ) and then the “la” of two is where the next measure starts.
Is this just me overanalyzing? I know there’s a measure in Master of Puppets that doesn’t quite fit into 5/8 or 6/8 and it’s somewhere in the middle but this seems like it’s intentional that they modulated on the eighth note triplet and made a measure of 4/12.
Let me know what you guys think! :)
