[FRESH METAL]#122 Paysage d'Hiver, Incantation, Pyrrhon, Bell Witch & Aerial Ruin, Acherontas

Welcome to Fresh Metal, a roundup of new, heavy releases. You can find most albums and songs in the playlist on Spotify. Support this via Patreon and don't forget to sign up for the newsletter. I skipped a week, but I'll make it up to you this week with all releases of last ánd this week, plus some things I had missed earlier and I've all thrown them together. This is just one huge messy pileup of a newsletter. You'll love it. Here goes Fresh Metal #122.

New Albums

My favourites

Releasing the most icy, grim, cold and bitter piece of black metal in june? Really? One-man band Paysage d'Hiver (black/ambient from Switzerland) does it and I'm not complaining. I'll have this any day when it's this good: beautiful melodies burried in harsh winds of black metal. Completely addictive.

When Angry Metal Guy gives a 5.0, you pay attention (even though I agree on just one of all the 5.0's they gave). But although I really tried, I couldn't really get into Pyrrhon's (tech death from the USA) third record. Regardless I dove into album number four with open ears and mind and this one hits me the right way. It's not easy meat they serve, but it's tasty.

Let me brag about being the only person in the world who has interviewed a member of Al-Namrood (black from Saudi Arabia) face to face. I can't say much about him, because he is still very much endangering his life by releasing music. That alone is a great reason to check it out, but it's also wild black metal with unique folk elements that comes from the heart and scorches the soul.

Some more of my personal tips , just to make this soup a little manageable: Hail Spirit Noir (inventive and very catchy psych/avantgarde/post-black from Greece, somewhere between Arcturus and Oranssi Pazuzu), Acherontas (biting and grandious black from Greece), Bell Witch & Aerial Ruin (a slow and dark collaboration, not a split, between the sludge/funeral doom band Bell Witch and dark folk act Aerial Ruin, both from the USA), and don't sleep on the new batch of I, Voidhanger goodness if you want something really different: Neptunian Maximalism (drone/jazz/psych/whatever from Belgium), Thecodontion (black/death from Italy), Fleshvessel (experimental death from the USA) and Creature (prog black from France).

There's (a lot) more

There are new albums, demo’s, splits and ep’s out from Vampire (death/thrash from Sweden), Lamb of God (groove/metalcore from the USA), Carach Angren (symphonic black from the Netherlands), Netherlands (sludge/noise from the USA), Mantar (sludge/black from Germany - these are grunge covers), Wino (acoustic folk from the USA), I'm in a Coffin (depressive black from the USA), Falconer (folk/power from Sweden), Serocs (brutal tech death from Mexico), Exocrine (prog/tech death from France), Inexorum (meloblack/death from the USA), Ohhms (sludge/post from the UK), Voidceremony (prog death/black from the USA), Vile Creature (sludge/drone/doom from Canada), NTSC/Mudo (noise from Brazil/Belgium, featuring Igorr Cavalera), Kall (depressive/black from Sweden - ex-Lifelover members), Irae (raw black from Portugal), Protest The Hero (prog/heavy from Canada), Stygian Crown (doom from the USA), Purtenance (death from Finland), Lantern (black/death from Finland), Pale Divine (doom from the USA), Long Distance Calling (post/prog from Germany), Nexion (black/death from Iceland), Atavist (sludge/drone/doom from the UK), Spirit Adrift (doom from the USA), Dismalimerence (prog/atmoblack from the USA), Dauþuz (black from Germany), Canis Dirus (black from the USA), Eye of Nix (black/doom/avantgarde from the USA), Indricothere (tech doom? There's a teaser for new Kataklysm (melodeath from Canada), one for the new Varathron (black from Greece) live record, one for the new Pain of Salvation (prog from Sweden) album and one - which I'm exceptionally excited for - for the new Ayreon (prog from the Netherlands) record.
